Whilst going to university is an exciting and inspiring time in a young person's life, there is also, sadly, increasing financial pressure for many Exeter students, detracting from their ability to focus on their studies. Many students will be living away from home for the first time and will face challenges such as high rents, bills and food expenses, with limited means of covering their costs.
Research by the Higher Education Policy Institute presents some alarming figures about the present-day student experience, with those students receiving the maximum government-provided maintenance support needing to work nearly 19 hours a week at minimum wage to reach the Minimum Income Standard threshold*. Faced with such a financial burden, it leaves little time for studying and attending lectures, let alone for socialising and participating in sports clubs and societies. It also places particular pressure on those students who are unable to work many hours due to caring responsibilities, a disability or health condition.
We are committed to addressing this imbalance through the Success for All Fund. With the generous support of Exeter alumni alongside direct contributions from the University, we’ve provided hardship grants to 1,706 students over the 12 months to September 2024.
Below are some quotes from recent grant recipients that show what an enormous difference this support makes to their time at Exeter.
“I cannot express how grateful I am for this support, and it will really aid me in my final months of university. I can’t imagine how I would have got by otherwise.”“Thank you so much, your offer of financial assistance is truly appreciated.”
Make a gift today to provide a student with much-needed support to focus on their studies across the year ahead, and help create a pathway for them to go on to achieve their dreams at Exeter.
With continued uncertainty over the economy and cost of living, donations from alumni make such a difference. With your help, we can support students through the difficult years to come and make sure that Exeter remains the place you know and love – where all students can thrive regardless of their financial circumstances.
